Every year, during the week of George Washington's birthday, the nation's engineers celebrate National Engineers Week. The purpose of
National Engineers Week is to increase public awareness and appreciation of the engineering profession. The event was founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. The significance of George Washington's birthday is that the nation's first president had the background of an engineer and land surveyor and established the first call for an engineering school, which led to the founding of West Point.
The Citadel has a rich engineering heritage dating back to 1842, making it the fifth oldest engineering school in the United States. Each year during Engineers Week, The Citadel hosts an engineering fair. The event has many exhibits and exciting competitions. It is an opportunity for future engineers to gain a deeper understanding of the profession and for the community to come to The Citadel and learn more about engineering.
2009 marks the 10th year The Citadel has held middle and high school engineering design competitions and it is shaping up to be an exciting year! The School of Engineering is bring a week of exciting events and competitions to the Lowcountry.
Events for 2009 include:
- a craft stick bridge competition
- a Lego Robotics baseball competition
- a NEW robotics competition, Lego Golf, for 2009!
- demonstrations and presentations of Electrical and Computer Engineering student inventions
